Bodybuilding, Health & the Bible

Ever wondered what God thinks about bodybuilding and our health?

We’re about to find out…

The human

We humans were created by an all powerful and sovereign God. He created everthing, the universe and everything in it with just one word. And when He created us, He breathed His life into us. So His life is in us and He is part of us if we want Him to be. We are spirit, soul and body. And were created to glorify our Maker and to have a relasionship with Him. He created us in His image, so we look like Him (not that He has a body of flesh) but meaning that were created in His likeness.

When He created finished creating everything and man He said, it is very good. So we are very good. And He is very pleased with how He created us.

Where it went wrong

Adam and Eve (first two created humans) chose to sin and were told to leave the perfect garden of Eden. Their decendants began to live a life without Him and followed their own evil desires. People wanted to be like God but without God. There is only one God and He is a jealous God. You can’t serve both Him and yourself.

As it says in Romans 1:20, 25

“Proffessing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man”…”and worshiped and served the creation rather than the Creator.”

And that’s exactly what people do with their physiques. Want to show it off, make like they have the physique of a god…a god amoungst men… and that’s how they get their confidence. Our trust and convidence should only be in God as Psalm 71:5 says “For You are my hope; O Lord GOD, You are my confidence from my youth.”

And as He said in Hebrews 13:5 –

“5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say:

“The Lord is my helper;
I will not fear.
What can man do to me?”

So how does this fit in with bodybuildig and trying to be active and healthy?

God wants us to be healthy

In 3 John 1:2 it says: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”

Because Adam and Eve chose to sin, God cursed the land. He said: “cursed is the ground for your sake, you shall toil in it all the days of your life” – Gen 3:17. When you toil, you are physically active and you sweat. ‘Till today people still have to toil in order to produce a crop of food to be able to eat. And evrything which God has made is good for food. Can you grow a coke or a burger or a cake? No. So what does that mean? Junk food isn’t good for our bodies.

King David said in Psalms that God is his strength and that he can bend a bow of bronze and that God enables him to overpower his enemies, because God is on his side. See even David didn’t do things out of himself, and take any glory for himself. His power and strength came from God, and that’s way beyond what we can do out of ourselves.

1 Timothy 4:8 says, “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things”.

Physical health and being physically active is important and has little profit, but your spiritual health and your relationship with God should be first priority, and is profitable for all things.

The problem comes in when you want to do all this without God.

We are either a child of God or a follower of the devil. There is no in between. And devil wants to destroy God’s children. As it says in John 10:10… “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”.

From the very beginning, satan (lucifer) wanted to be god, without God. He wanted to be greater and more powerful than God. But his plan did not succeed. As it says in Isaiah 14:12-15…

“How you are fallen from heaven,
O Lucifer, son of the morning!
How you are cut down to the ground,
You who weakened the nations!
For you have said in your heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven,
I will exalt my throne above the stars of God;
I will also sit on the mount of the congregation
On the farthest sides of the north;
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds,
I will be like the Most High.’
Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,
To the lowest depths of the Pit.”

Satan and all his angels (who wanted to rebel along with him) were thrown out of Heaven.

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.” – Revelation 12:9

So for everyone who thinks of themselves as a ‘god’, that’s really not a god idea.

God’s commandment to us

God commands us to walk in love with one another, to walk in rightousness, truth, integrity, respect, without anger, patience and so on. All that is good.

But serving God is a choice. God does not force anyone to serve Him. But when we say no to Him, we automatically say yes to the thief – satan, who can only have an open door to our lives when we say no to God. And saying no to God means that we want to rule our own lives as our own gods. And there are concequences to bare. As it says in Romans 1:28-32…

“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrightousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, voilent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgement of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.”

So those who are guilty of the above mentioned things (which we all are), are deserving of death. But by accepting Jesus Christ as our Saviour and repenting for our sins, we are no longer bound to death, but choose to walk in truth.

Proverbs 16:18 also says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

Humans were made to glorify God and not be self-seeking. By being prideful prevents you to be able to give the glory to the One who gave you life.

Bodybuilding for most is easily turned into the lust of the flesh, which leads to sin and sin leads to death. – 1 John 2:16, “the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – is not of the Father (God) but is of the world.”

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subjected to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” – Romans 8:5-8

“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you now know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” – James 4:4

Here is what you do with lust. “Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save you soul.” – James 1:21.

“And do not present your members as instruments of unrightousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of rightousness to God.” – Romans 6:13.

Once again, in whatever you do always remeber to glorify God and not yourself.

Why should we turn from wicked ways?

“But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the days of wrath and revelation of the rightous judgement of God, who will render to each one according to his deeds”. – Romans 2:6.

Jesus loves everyone and wants everyone to be saved and to join him in paradise, but by rejecting Him, there is no way to be saved.  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” – John 3:16-17

Remember, God created us in His image and wants us to be healthy and well. Our focus should not be on being the best bodybuilder in the world. As Jesus said: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His rightousness, and all these things shall be added onto you.” – Matt 6:33

You can be a bodybuilder, but it should not be first priority. Don’t be a slave to your own body, but rather serve Jesus with your body, soul and spirit. Your life will just be so much more amazing, with the safe assurance that you are not going to spend eternity with the devil and all his angels in the lake of fire.

There are many who do not accept Jesus and what He’s done for us on the cross, but in the end, we’ll all experience what is still to come… “The Son of Man will send out His angles, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth.” – Matthew 13:41-42.

The choices we make in the now will effect our eternity, and that is way more important than the life we are in right now.
